RARE Vintage 50s CAROLYN SCHNURER Novelty Print Dress

This is a wonderful example of Carolyn Schnurer's design and textile work. Carolyn Schnurer was known for her ingenious use of fabric and unusual textile patterns. She found creative inspiration from her many travels all over the world and used this inspiration in her unique prints. She only designed for a very short period of time from the 1940s until the late 1950s. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of fashion history! She is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection - how about yours too!

This fabulous one-shoulder dress is done in a fun novelty print cotton fabric. The background is an olive green with the print being done in cherry red, golden yellow and peacock blue. Fantastic one-shoulder design that makes this dress THE perfect sun dress for the hot summer months. The bodice is fully lined in a yellow cotton fabric. The skirt is unlined.

Note the wonderful use of cutting the fabric on the bias for the bodice. This use allows the print to run diagonal and create visual interest at the top of the dress - along with repeating the visual line of the one-shoulder design element. The bodice is fitted and has darts at the bustline for a flattering fit as well as princess seaming. Softly pleated at the very top of the shoulder. The skirt has two inverted front pleats at the waistline. No pleats at the back. Small 6 inch kick pleat at back of skirt for ease of movement. I have shown the dress in one photo with a red belt for even more interest. This belt does not come with the dress.
